The Growthland swine real estate and swine management teams attended the World Pork Expo in Des Moines IA, on June 4th and 5th. The World Pork Expo is the largest gathering of pork producers and allied industry people in the U.S. It is also the largest pork trade show in the U.S., and held annually on the Iowa State Fairgrounds. It draws thousands of U.S and international pork industry stakeholders that come for the education, the products, equipment, and services provided by the vendors for pork producers, and of course great BBQ.

Pork Expo is sponsored by the National Pork Producer’s Council (NPPC) and it is an opportunity for the NPPC and the National Pork Board (NPB) to engage in direct communication with pork stakeholders about their initiatives and activities on behalf of pork producers. Updates are usually given on legislative and regulatory work, pork promotion and marketing, risk management, and production management topics.  The attendees are mostly producers, allied industry representatives, and other stakeholders such as banks, feed mills, meat packers, and processors.

For the Growthland team the World Pork Expo is an opportunity to meet with our customers face to face from all around the country over the span of two days, all in one place. The swine real estate team and the swine management team can be seen all over the grounds for those two days, having a sit down or casual interactions with customers and industry leaders.  Our goal is to have our “finger on the pulse of the industry” by understanding who is growing their business, who is contracting, how producers, bankers, and allied business people are feeling about the pork industry, and who are buyers and sellers of swine real estate and swine management services at this time and in the future.

Of course, a walk through the trade show is always enlightening. Several hundred vendors display everything from the largest manure spreading equipment and semi-trailers, to smallest vaccines and ear tags, nutrient management services, feeding systems, gates, concrete slats, and just about anything else a pig farmer needs, and quite a lot of things they don’t need. It is truly a diverse atmosphere full of opportunity for those that are curious.

This year, more so than recent years, attendance seemed to be up at the World Pork Expo. It is a testament to the optimism of farmers. Additionally, when you look at all the tents and all the vendors and all the BBQ grills, it’s easy to think that the pork production industry is huge in the US. In reality pork industry is quite small compared to many other agricultural industries.

Through our efforts over the years to develop relationships with the stakeholders up and down the supply chain, a Growthland team member usually has a contact at almost every major producer group, financial institution, meat Packer, equipment manufacturer, Drug company, feed company, and many other industry sectors. We rely heavily on our ability to establish and cultivate relationships in the swine industry. It is really quite remarkable, and is one of Growthland’s greatest strengths.
